Horse fly hoods, as the name suggests, protect your horse’s sensitive ears from annoying insects during their ridden work, which can help to reduce headshaking and snorting. In recent years, they are becoming more frequently used to help with concentration in competition horses or in those easily distracted at home. Fly hoods reduce the sound your horse experiences and so can be helpful in settling a reactive or nervous horse, reducing spooking and tension and improving focus.

Acoustic ears for horses have additional padding on the section that covers the ears which further reduces noise; especially beneficial to horses that are noise-sensitive, over-reactive or tense.

What size Horse fly hood should I get?

The same size as your bridle is most likely to be a good fit. If your horse has an especially broad brow or large ears, a size up may be best. If the fly veil is too small it is likely to come off more easily, whereas a fly veil that is too big may be shaken off easily and may irritate the horse by coming too close to the eyes.

Can I do dressage in a fly hood?

Yes, fly veils including acoustic ears for horses are legal according to British Dressage rules, for use in both indoor and outdoor arenas in the warm up and competition ring. Tie-down fly veils which tie onto the noseband are not permitted. Ear plugs cannot be used outside of prize givings, but sound reducing fly veils are a permitted alternative for use in both the competition ring and prize givings. Fly veils used in dressage should be discreet in colour.

Are fly veils British Showjumping legal?

Yes, fly hoods including acoustic ears are permitted for use in the ring and warm ups according to British Showjumping rules. Tie-down fly veils which attach to the noseband of the bridle are permitted, and British Showjumping are more tolerant of bright colours.
