Here at Houghton Country, we have a huge range of LeMieux saddle pads and numnahs for you to browse online and in store. From the simple to the colourful, and the basic to the technical, we have them all — including saddle pads that are designed to fit general-purpose, close contact/jumping, and dressage saddles.
LeMieux Merino lambswool saddle pads are what originally established their place in the market as a manufacturer of innovative, high quality saddle pads. They have since expanded into bamboo lined cotton and suede saddle pads in a huge range of colours, which are incredibly popular, as well as super breathable mesh saddle pads, mini pads especially designed for small ponies, and half pads to adjust the fit of your saddle if required as well as provide shock absorption. With so much choice and variation available, you may find our Saddlepad Guide helpful.
How do I wash my LeMieux saddle pad?
You will find care instructions for each type of pad on the product description and the label on the pad itself, however most LeMieux saddle pads are machine washable at 30 degrees C with similar colours. LeMieux advise their pads are washed inside a wash bag with cactus balls to collect loose hairs, with a non-biological detergent, then air dried. If instructions are followed, the pads wash very well. It is advised to remove as many loose hairs as possible before washing, and regularly between rides, by gently brushing them off.
Will a LeMieux pad rub my horse?
If any saddle pad is fitted incorrectly, the binding can cause rubs on the horse's back. Likewise, if a pad is never cleaned and sweat, grease and loose hairs are allowed to build up, this can cause irritation including rubs and lumps. If your saddle pad fits correctly and is kept clean, with hairs being brushed off and washing regularly, it should not cause rubs to your horse. Many of the LeMieux saddle pads feature bamboo lining, which has been used for years as a lining to saddle pads because it is efficient at absorbing sweat and is soft to the touch. If your horse has sensitive skin that is prone to rubs, a Merino lambskin lined pad, rather than a plain cotton or bamboo lined pad, may be most suitable, as Merino lambswool provides the softest material against your horse's skin, minimising the chance of rubs. Regardless of the lining chosen, it is advised to keep your saddle pads clean, washing them regularly, and free of hair, as well as ensuring they are sized correctly, to reduce the chance of rubs.
What size LeMieux saddle pad should I buy?
Most LeMieux saddle pads come in Small/Medium size as well as Large. Small and Extra Large are also available in some styles, as well as their Mini range, which is designed for small ponies - i.e. those under 12.2hh who would be too small to take the Small/Medium. A Large saddle pad is suitable for a saddle 17" and longer, while a Small/Medium is suitable for 16"-16.5". The size you select also depends on the depth of your horse and the style of your saddle - if he is particularly deep in the body, or your saddle has a long flap, a size up may be best.
LeMieux are undoubtedly industry leaders when it comes to saddle pads, with a huge selection including saddlecloths, numnahs and half pads to choose from - something for every activity, type of saddle and horse!
