Splints are caused by damage to the ligament which holds the splint bone to the cannon bone, as inflammation in the area settles new bone is laid down in the area which form a hard lump. They can occur in both the front and hind legs. In the best-case scenario, Splints affect the value of the horse as a blemish even if they have stabilised and are not impinging on the suspensory nerve, in worst cases, they cause clinical lameness.
